Technique Tip: Optimize Gate Location for Better Part Quality

 

Purpose:Correctly placing gates is critical to ensuring that molten plastic fills the mold cavity uniformly, reducing issues like warping, shrinkage, and flow marks.

 

Tip Details:

1. Locate Gates on Thicker Sections: Place gates in the thickest section of the part to promote even flow and pressure distribution, helping to avoid voids or sink marks in thicker areas.

 

2. Avoid Weld Lines in Visible Areas: Try to place gates where the flow lines meet in less visible sections of the part. Weld lines form where two flow fronts meet, which can weaken the part and reduce its visual appeal.

 

3. Centralize Gate Location to Minimize Flow Path: For optimal filling, the gate should be as central as possible relative to the mold cavity. This reduces the flow length, which helps ensure consistent pressure across the part and reduces the risk of defects.

 

4. Consider Gate Size and Shape: Adjust the gate size based on material properties and part requirements. A larger gate will allow for faster flow but might leave a larger mark. Tapered gates (such as fan or diaphragm gates) are ideal for larger, flatter parts, distributing material evenly across the surface.

 

5. Use Simulation Tools: Utilize mold flow simulation software to test and validate the gate location. Simulations can predict potential issues with flow, cooling, and warping, allowing you to make data-driven adjustments before manufacturing.
