When you have a needed of making a plastic injection molding,you will need to know how much do I need to pay for it? The important factors in the cost of your mold are a combination of the part size, product complexity, raw material, and expect annual production. 

For your example, if you want to produce a washer,and need to make 1,000 washers per year, we would suggest you make a single cavity mold with soft steel,such as 1.1730 or Alumium 6061. It means to make one washer per machine cycle. Then in this case, this mold would probably be $1,000-2,000.

This kind of molds we called it with prototye mold with small quantity or just a testing of market.

At the same time,if your part is a Xbox controllers,and the production quantity is 100,000 per month, it would be a totally different story. For this requirement, we would build a 12 cavities mold,means family mold which would make four Fronts, four Backs, and four Button Trees every cycle per machine. Of course, this high quantity type of mold need to have good steel,such as LKM 1.2343 HRC 48-52,which the steel need to be heat treatment and CNC machining need to have twice for this special steel,then it comes with a cost. You’d better have $50-$70,000 or more to think about it.

These 2 items just for your example,as you know there are a variety of plastic parts,different construction,different size,different surface treatment.  But it shows a range of costs to anticipate. 

Your spend cost will be according your part request and mold requests.In real mold making,you will see this is the right rule to follow it,you will get what you pay.
