Custom Plastic Container Molds For Large Parts And Complex Undercuts

Large plastic containers can be difficult to mold when the part has deep undercuts, complex parting lines, or specific surface finish requirements. These features affect not only the mold structure but also how the finished part releases from the mold. For this reason, mold design needs to account for the actual part geometry and production conditions from the beginning.

Deep Mould manufactures custom plastic container molds based on customer drawings and project requirements. The following case involves three large molds exported to Germany. It illustrates how the team addressed a deep core-side undercut, a long ejection stroke, and several large sliders within the mold structure.

Large Plastic Container Mold Design and Specifications

This project covered three molds for a complete product range. Each mold used a single-cavity layout (1 × 1), with 1.2738H steel selected for the mold construction. The two larger molds also used YUDO open-gate systems.

These specifications were determined by the project requirements rather than applied as a standard configuration. For large custom plastic container molds, factors such as part dimensions, wall thickness, molding material, and the available injection molding machine all influence the final design.

A single-cavity layout can suit a project when the part size and mold structure take priority over producing several parts in one cycle. However, the appropriate layout still depends on the required output, tooling budget, and production plan.

By reviewing these factors before machining begins, the tooling team can establish a practical structure for the mold and identify potential design issues early.

Mold Design for Complex Undercut Structures

The main challenge in this project was a large undercut on the core side. This feature prevented the part from releasing through a straightforward ejection movement. The mold therefore needed a mechanism that could clear the undercut before the part was removed.

Deep Mould designed a large lifter with a total ejection stroke of 300 mm. The mold also incorporated four large external sliders to accommodate the part geometry and the required parting lines. The tooling was designed for use on a Haitian 900-ton injection molding machine.

For custom plastic container molds with deep undercuts, the lifter and slider arrangement requires careful consideration. Their travel distances, clearances, and movement sequences must work together without interfering with one another. Otherwise, the mold may require additional adjustments during trials, or the molded part may encounter problems during release.

The required movement should therefore be considered during the initial mold design, not left until the first trial. This is particularly important for large tooling, where changes to moving components can take additional time.

High-Gloss Cavity Finishing

The customer also required a high-gloss cavity finish. Deep Mould specified SP1-A2 high-gloss polishing for all cavity surfaces to meet the project's surface requirements.

For high-gloss plastic container molds, the cavity finish needs to match the intended appearance of the molded part. At the same time, the final surface quality depends on more than polishing alone. Resin characteristics, molding conditions, and mold maintenance can also affect the result.

The mold structure and machine requirements must be considered together. In this case, the tooling was designed around the customer's production setup, including the 900-ton Haitian injection molding machine.

During mold trials, the team can inspect the molded surface and check whether the part releases properly. If the results reveal any issues, the relevant mold details or processing conditions can then be reviewed.

Customer Participation in the Mold Trial

The customer visited the factory and took part in the mold trial. He had many years of experience in mold manufacturing and paid close attention to the tooling details and trial results.

After inspecting the initial molds, he submitted a new inquiry to Deep Mould. This follow-up provided positive feedback on the team's work and communication.

For overseas customers sourcing custom container mold tooling, a mold trial offers an opportunity to review the actual result rather than rely on drawings alone. It also allows the customer and tooling team to discuss any adjustments before the molds move further into production.

Clear communication is especially useful when a project involves large lifters, multiple sliders, or other mechanisms that require coordinated movement. Both parties can review the results and agree on the next steps based on the actual trial.

Evaluating Mold Design and Manufacturing Capabilities

When sourcing large plastic container molds, buyers should consider more than the initial tooling price. The proposed mold structure, machining requirements, machine compatibility, and trial arrangements all affect the project.

Before placing an order, it is worth checking the following points:

 •  Undercut design: Ask how the supplier plans to release the part and whether lifters or sliders are required.

 •  Mold steel: Confirm the proposed steel grade and its suitability for the intended production conditions.

 •  Ejection travel: Check that the ejection stroke provides enough clearance for the part geometry.

 •  Slider arrangement: Review how the sliders move and how they support the required parting lines.

 •  Surface finish: Specify the required cavity finish and the expected appearance of the molded part.

 •  Machine compatibility: Confirm that the mold dimensions and opening and ejection requirements suit the intended machine.

 •  Trial and inspection: Establish how the supplier will check the molded parts and handle any necessary adjustments.

These details help buyers assess whether a supplier's proposed tooling solution fits the actual project, rather than comparing quotations on price alone.
